Barra Honda National Park is one of the least visited national parks in Costa Rica so this adventure tour provides a real off-the-beaten-path experience. The park features deep caves. As you hike the trails in the park you might see birds, monkeys, anteaters, coatis, etc. (Depending on road conditions due to rain, visitors on rare occasions need to hike up to an hour and a half to reach the entrance of the cave.) Your guide equips you with a harness and rope to use as you climb down a ladder for about 90 feet into the Caverna Terciopelo. You will also be provided with a helmet and headlamp. Once in the cave you will see a profusion of stalactites, stalagmites and many beautiful formations such as soda straws, pearls, roses, needles, cave grapes, curtains and terraces.
After your visit to the cave and your hike back to the reception area, you will have a home cooked lunch at Doña Estela's house just outside the park in the village of Quebrada Honda. Next you will travel to the Tempisque River for a boat tour lasting about 2 hours. Your guide will point out many sea birds and crocodiles. You tour finishes with return transportation to your start point.
